Discover the stories that shaped Bangalore through its iconic streets and landmarks in the historic cantonment, the area developed by the British in the 19th century that gave the city its cosmopolitan character. From the old Opera House on Brigade Road to the vibrant culture of Church Street—with its bookstores, crafts and cafés—this experience brings together the many layers of the city’s past and present. With stops alongside St. Mark’s Church, Koshy’s and the green avenues of Cubbon Park with views of the High Court and Vidhana Soudha, visitors leave with a deeper appreciation of Bangalore’s character, culture and history.

Tour Program

  • Samsung Opera House – The tour begins outside this historic building on Brigade Road, admiring its colonial-era architecture and learning about its past as Bangalore’s Opera House, where plays, films and performances once reflected the lively cultural life of the British cantonment. Standing on Brigade Road, it marks one of the city’s most iconic streets, which grew into a bustling commercial and social hub of colonial Bangalore.
  • Church Street – One of Bangalore’s most vibrant cultural corridors, known for its cafés, street art and creative energy. The street is home to iconic bookhouses like Blossom Book House and Higginbothams, long cherished by generations of readers. It also recalls the historic Plaza Theatre, once a beloved cinema landmark before the site was redeveloped for the city’s metro. Nearby stands the office of Deccan Herald, one of Karnataka’s leading newspapers—together capturing the literary, artistic and intellectual spirit that defines Church Street.
  • Indian Coffee House – A snack stop at this old Bangalore classic on Church Street, part of the historic Indian Coffee House chain started by the Indian Coffee Board in the 1950s. The café still carries its timeless charm—waiters in their signature turbans and starched uniforms, simple wooden interiors and walls filled with vintage photographs and paintings. For decades, it has been a gathering place for writers, students and thinkers, making it one of the city’s most nostalgic and enduring coffee houses.
  • St. Mark’s Cathedral –One of Bangalore’s oldest churches, first built by the British in 1809 and known for its elegant colonial architecture. The church houses a historic pipe organ believed to have been donated by the then captain of the England cricket team. Along the same lane stand institutions that echo the old cantonment atmosphere, including the legendary Koshy’s, a café long associated with old city regulars, the Bible Society of India, and the lively Hard Rock Cafe, all reflecting the layered colonial and cultural character of this part of Bangalore.
  • Cubbon Park – Cubbon Park – A walk through Cubbon Park feels like stepping into a living museum of Bangalore’s history. Established in 1870 and later named after Sir Mark Cubbon, this 300-acre green space is home to historic trees and colonial landmarks. Along its edge rises the striking red Attara Kacheri (High Court), one of Bangalore’s most recognizable colonial buildings, facing the grand Vidhana Soudha, the seat of Karnataka’s legislature—together creating a unique open-air gallery where nature, colonial history and modern governance meet.
